“Light and dark” – Appenzeller Bachtage 2022

Eliciting mood, heightening drama, shining a light on the inner workings of the human soul: late Renaissance and early Baroque painters rendered these effects through their mastery of chiaroscuro techniques. In his music, Johann Sebastian Bach also draws on juxtaposition, with some settings radiating a glistening light and others shrouding the poor soul in desperate darkness.

With its “light and dark” motif, the 2022 edition of the Appenzeller Bachtage is focusing on themes of contradiction, difference and variation. The five-day summer festival creates space for controversial discussion and fruitful confrontation – and perhaps will pave the way to a new, common understanding. After all, it is only in their relationship to one another that we are able to perceive light and shadows.
