Appenzell Bach Days – a young festival with great experience

The origin of the five-day festival lies in the great Swiss Bach project of the J.S. Bach Foundation. Since 2006, the St. Gallen-based foundation has been performing the complete vocal works of J.S. Bach in Trogen, Appenzellausserrhoden. The cultural project will reach its conclusion – at a rhythm of one work per month – in 2027. 160 have already been performed. The Appenzell Bach Days break up this rhythm of cantatas and invite people every two years to take a different look at Bach’s music. But also with composers who followed him and with other musical styles. In addition, the five-day festival offers local performers and young people a forum to present themselves musically.

For the fourth time, one of the greatest composers of all time met the Appenzellerland in 2022. Listening exploration, shared experience and exchange in an informal atmosphere were the focus of the Appenzell Bach Days. Numerous highlights attracted visitors from Switzerland and abroad to Appenzellerland.

"We can look back on a successful and well-attended festival," says Xoán Castiñeira, Managing Director of J. S. Bach St. Gallen AG. The mix of first-class concerts, prominent podiums, unconventional formats and local Appenzell colour went down very well with the visitors - many of whom had travelled from Germany.
